A neutral and beneficial environment to view dolphins and communication with dolphins via AR glass

Project statement

A new dolphin aquarium mode is designed not only for kids to cultivate their capabilities of loving marine animals and respecting nature, but also for dolphins to return to sea and enjoy the normal life instead of being kidnapped to perform in the glasshouse. 

Due to human activities, the situation of marine animals was even more severe. They belong to the sea, not us.

Why aquariums suck

This curve illustrates that even with the increasing number of aquariums, more people are realizing that we should protect these marine animals and stop capturing them.

Technical support

Scientists discovered that dolphin sounds can be translated into human language, so it is possible for kids to communicate with dolphins in the future.

We should discard the traditional aquarium which does harm to marine animals, and it is urgent for us to develop a neutral environment, so as to help kids contact the real living environment of dolphins and have a better interaction with them.

To scope out potential opportunities to design for, I completed a user journey map visualizing a family's experience at the aquarium.  The user journey map is mainly designed to illustrate how the parents and kids' moods share or conflict with each other during the whole journey.

Location choice

During the Dolphin Wildlife Refuge Tour, visitors will journey into the dolphin rich waterways of Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge. Their local dolphin population is second to none in the Lowcountry. 

To better understand those who have deep connections with this project, I illustrate Maslow's hierarchy of three species' needs, including dolphins, consumers and aquariums nowadays.

After considering the effectiveness and efficiency of AR glass on visual and communication effects, I decided to utilize them as the implementation tool. Moreover, I compared the competing AR glass products and chose ODG R9 as AR glass DOLCHAT would use.

Based on the above analysis, I did a quick ideation for the project, figuring out ways that can address the problems that I found in the research. And the key elements of this product are a special ship with a lower deck and AR glasses serving as a communication tool.

Why a ship of a lower deck?

Whoever seeing the dolphins from the top down, they will feel a sense of threat. When a man looks at the dolphins horizontally, he will no longer look like a person at the top of the food chain, but a partner who is communicating with the dolphins. In return, dolphins can feel respect.

Before      People have a dolphin-visiting tour by ship, standing 2 meters higher than dolphins. They cannot have physical or mental contact with dolphins.

After        When dolphins come, people can get downstairs to lower deck as tall as dolphins, then people can communicate with dolphins by AR Glass.

Interface prototype & testing

With very quick user tests, I got some very insightful feedback from the user to improve my design.

Family games research in

In order to better design a game-like system preferred by children, I conduct some family games research in Nintendo, which is a Japanese multinational consumer electronics and video game company, creating some of the best-known and top-selling video game franchises, such as Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Pokémon.
