Stir what you like

Research has shown that over 80% of dinners in the U.S. are consumed in the home. However, completely homemade meals are declined. People are reluctant to spend a lot of time on complicated home cooking because they want it simple and quick. However, some time spent on cooking could be avoidable, for example, people should constantly stir to avoid sticking, and wait for a long time to finish it. So this pot lid with a stirring stick connecting to an APP is served to save people’s time for cooking.

Cooking or takeout or restaurant?

Interviews

My mother and I always encountered some problems when cooking, such as forgetting to turn off heat, overcooking, and having no idea if the dish is cooked. Therefore, I wonder if other people have the same problems. So I conducted interviews with my friends and relatives.

Survey on cooking

I gathered the information about the elements the three interviews wanted for cooking in an attempt to find the attention and opportunity points.

Survey on cooking

Nowadays, it seems that the first choice of food is takeout or restaurant rather than cooking by self. After all, time is becoming more and more precious.  Research shows that time cost is one of the common barriers to healthy eating. In addition to time and cost, many people often do not believe in their ability to make healthy food. It is unworthy to buy and wash ingredients, cook and wash dishes for filling the stomach.

User experience map

In this user experience map, I observed a user, Daisy, whose feelings and actions towards cooking. I want to have a deep understanding of the possible pain-points and opportunities forf it.

Scenarios

By visualizing the scenarios of cooking food, it becomes obvious what kinds of problems that a customer could possibly encounter.

Summary    When cooking, people should constantly stir to avoid sticking, and wait for a long time to finish it. For busy people, the time spent is boring and cumbersome, so I want to design a product to solve these problems.

Common homemade meals

In order to better understand home cooking, I researched home cooking of many countries and found problems including complicated cooking process and long cooking time of some home cooking.

Mind map

Sketches

After the mind map, I draw a few of sketches about a product to solve the problems of forgetting cooking order and condiments while cooking.

However, after rethinking the main pain points and user appeals, I found the leading cause is that users spend much time, but do not get the expected taste.

User expectations & solutions

Here I put forward and summarized the corresponding solutions to these problems.

Sketches of the pot lid

Based on the above expectations of cooking, I drew the product draft.

Work flow

This workflow illustrates the normal cooking steps with the use of this designed pot lid for making Chinese dishes.

3D modeling by Rhinoceros

I made the model of the pot cover with Rhinoceros for higher precision.

APP UI Prototype & testing

I first made a paper prototype to do a quick user test, and quote the problems from the testing prototype below.

Solutions

Here are the solutions to the problems given in the prototype testing.

Mood board

Symbols of orange and yellow:

Orange, vitamin, delicious, appetitive, fresh, young, interesting, warm, active and friendly.

Food will look more delicious with the combination of yellow and orange.

Logo design

The pot cover is the most unique and representative part based on which the APP is designed, so I represented the form of pot cover in an abstract way.

Stir

Because one of the main function of this app with pot lid is stirring, I named this app stir, which sounds like skr.  Skr is usually used as saying something awesome and favorable, so I want this app with pot lid would give users this feeling.
